Does Your Child Have Seizures? - You are NOT alone... let's talk
MORE INFO COMING SOON!

Talking to Teachers, School Nurses and School Administrators

There are two things that are not really addressed at Epilepsy Classroom.  One is the need to pay very close attention to children with partial seizures.  Children that have this type of seizure may get up and wander around, climb on furniture, stare, or act very out of character and will not respond to anyone.  Sharing this information with your child's school can help them recognize a partial seizure that could otherwise go unnoticed, or be treated as misbehavior. Your child should not be punished for behavior that is completely out of his or her control.

The second is explaining the side effects from your child's medication.  More on this is discussed under Medications; however, it is important to let your child's teacher know when you are increasing, decreasing or changing your child's medication.  Changes will often cause mood swings and temporary behavior issues.  Extra patience may be required during these times.

This information sharing should not only apply to your child's teachers, but to all caregivers (i.e., babysitters, church staff, dance instructors, etc.)

A seizure can be a frightening experience for someone that isn't prepared.  A little preparation can help keep your child safe, and help the caregiver remain calm.
