Does Your Child Have Seizures? - You are NOT alone... let's talk
Other Medications

There are several very common children's medications that should be avoided if your child has seizures.  These medications do not have the same reaction in all children, but these have been known to increase the likelihood of seizures.  And often, doctors fail to mention these.

MEDICATIONS TO AVOID:
  • Acetaminophen is a very common pain reliever and fever reducer.  However, this medication can cause restlessness.  As discussed in the Sleep section, being tired is a definite seizure trigger.  Use ibuprofen instead.

  • Antihistamines found in cough, cold and allergy medications lower a persons seizure threshold.

  • Any medication that may cause drowsiness should not be mixed with seizure medications that also contain sedating ingredients that may cause drowsiness.  The combination could result in the child going into a coma.  This is not common, however, the possibility exists.

  • Avoid medications that have "dye" in them.  Red #40 in particular has been linked to hyperactivity and excitability in young children, again causing restlessness.
